I drove Carlos Mencia in a cargo van for a show at Navy Pier back in 2003 when he was a nobody. The whole thing with Raining Jane I have heard, but for some reason, still was expecting a full electric band. He didn't need it. He did just enough by himself and keep the weird moments comical that I actual believe that what was happening with truly live and not planned. I get bored easily with singer songwriters who do songs on their own or who get weird live. I do hope he goes back to the full band circa 2009 sound at some point, but that comes from selfishness. He is still a man with some words, who has a message of positivity, inclusion and happiness that no one can compete with. He's still just a guy in jeans and a fedora making a living and making someone's day. I still love what he does with song composing and lyrics and Raining Jane has such a unique approach, an amazing ability to play every instrument you can name (and some you cannot) and they play well together.
